Vinyl Added To The Penthouse Library

This 10” features his ‘classic’ quartet: McCoy Tyner – Piano, Billy Higgins – Drums and Steve Davis (not the techno loving snooker champion) – Bass; post Miles and pre the Tyner/Garrison/Jones era.

Recorded during Coltrane’s sole session for the New York-based Roulette Records in 1960 it was the first time Tyner and ‘Trane came into contact with each other in the studio. The result is a truly beautiful, raw version of the quartet’s signature sound, one with which we’d become very familiar with on their first Atlantic LP Giant Steps, released a year later. Highlights include the groove-led One and Four (Side B) and the alternate take from Exotica, the master version having been released on Coltrane and Lee Morgan’s Best Of Birdland Vol.1 in 1962.
